ECM 1120 Information Literacy: Books

Books

For our last week together, we talked about using books in research. People often think about books when they think of libraries, but you should know by now that books aren't the only things libraries have to offer!

Unlike scholarly articles that focus on narrow, specific subjects, books tend to be about large, broad topics. If you're doing research, you may not find an entire book about your topic! You may just find one chapter or even a paragraph that has the information you're looking for.

Generally, we've been taught that we can trust information we find in books. However, I think it's still very important to ask questions about the book and the person who wrote it and decide for ourselves if we can trust it or not, like we do with web sources. Each book in the library has been chosen by a librarian to add to our collection, so in general, the books in the library are trustworthy.

The handout on this page gives you information about searching for books in the library. If you run into a problem, remember that I'm always available via email to answer questions and, whenever the library is open, there's someone at the reference desk that can help you find what you're looking for.

Greensboro College has a huge selection of eBooks that you can read from anywhere! I think eBooks are a great resource for academic research. View the video above to see a tutorial on how to find and use eBooks at GC.
